Tanja Szewczenko

1999 German National Championships
Oberstdorf, Germany, Free Skate
At the age of three she started skating, at the age of fife she won her first competition, the "Ina-Bauer Pokal". Since 1991 Tanja has been coached by Peter Meyer and continued her remarkable rise with a Bronze medal at the 1993 Junior World Championships.

In 1994 she became the German Champion beating Katarina Witt and Marina Kielmann. She went on to finish

6th at the 1994 Winter Olympic Games and won the Bronze medal at 1994 World Championships.

But then her career got more and more effected by a lot of injuries and illnesses, so that she had problems to go on from her results of 1994. First, at the end of 1994 she got an inflammation of periosteum at her right ankle, just before the 1995 European Championships she got a serious influenza. Then, between European Championships and World Championships, she experienced an inflammation of periosteum in her left ankle and had to withdrew from 1995 World Championships.

Since the end of 1995 she suffered from a virus infection. Only in September 1996 a specialized virologist discovered two different viruses which had brought Tanja near the death. Tanja had to withdraw from all Champions Series events in 1996 and did not compete in the 1997 championships.

In 1997 she had a great comeback with winning the Sparkassen Cup on Ice in Gelsenkirchen, the NHK-Trophy in Nagano and the 2nd place at the Champions Series Final in Munich. She became again German Champion and won the Bronze medal at Europeans.

But then the problems came back. She had to withdrew from the 1998 Winter Olympic Games due to a serious influenza again and suffered a circulatory collapse at the World Championships only finishing at 9th rank.

In the 1998/99 season the inflammation of periosteum returned too and caused a break until the end of 1998. And in 1999 she had to withdrew from all Grand Prix Events and Shows she has been scheduled.

Tanja’s medical history became more and more a never ending story and still continues. Since about 1995 one can barely speak of a real figure skating career.

Tanja did officially quit her career in January 2001. She joined "Magic of the Dance" as a dancer.
