After Kristi quit pairs figure skating to concentrate on her career as single skater (she became 1992 Olympic Champion) Rudy Galindo returned to singles skating in 1991. After fife very hard years of permanently fighting against personal and financial obstacles he won the U.S. National Championships in his home town San Jose in 1996. He placed third in the World Championships the same year.
