Sergei and Ekaterina started
their career at the early eighties. They developed a style of high precision, elegance,
emotion und expressiveness. From 1986 to 1990 Sergei and Ekaterina won four times the
Worlds and twice the European Championships.
After the 1990 Goodwill Games they turned
professional but reinstated the eligible ranks for the 1994 Olympic season.
At the European Championships 1994 in
Kopenhagen, Denmark, Ekaterina and Sergei celebrated their comeback with the victory of
the pairs competition. They crowned their career with the Olympic gold medal 1994 in
Lillehammer.
Sergei died on Monday, November 20th, 1995,
at the age of 28. He got a heart attack while practicing in Lake Placid, N. Y. and died as
a result shortly after. Sergei left his wife and partner Ekaterina together with their
daughter Daria. The world lost one of the greatest pairs of Figure Skating history.
Ekaterina Gordeeva is continuing her skating
career as a singles skater. |
